When selecting building materials, health and wellbeing are aspects that are frequently neglected. It has been discovered that traditional materials are a source of hazardous emissions that have a negative impact on the health of individuals. On the other hand, Bio-based Building materials are increasingly being used instead of conventional materials as the construction sector aims to be more sustainable. However, these materials’ potential impacts on human health and wellbeing are also a source of worry. As a result, the purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive review of pertinent scientific research, with a focus on comparative studies that shed light on the effects of using bio-based building materials. Considering both positive and negative health effects, with a focus on indoor environment quality, indoor contaminants, and psychological health and well-being. The results highlight the need for more study and provide insightful information about how using bio-based building materials affects individuals’ health and well-being.

This paper considers microclimate to be one of the main contributors to thermal comfort in educational buildings. The influence of microclimate on well-being and productivity is considered. The role of microclimatic parameters is assessed from the perspective of building design, focusing on approaches to regulating these parameters. We also describe the formation of microclimate and the factors directly affecting it. The state of the microclimate of classrooms of an educational institution was analyzed, providing estimates of people’s real thermal sensations. The microclimate was assessed by the Fanger method. The PMV and PPD comfort indices were calculated for this purpose. The calculations were carried out thrice, i.e., based on the data obtained by using measuring equipment, based on the data from the survey and based on a SolidWorks model. Calculations in the program were carried out to validate the measured values and visualize the process of the distribution and localization of comfort indices. The results confirm that the indoor microclimate was generally favorable, and the PMV values obtained from the survey of people’s real sensations of thermal comfort were higher than the calculated PMV values. It was established that the PMV and PPD values corresponding to the largest deviations from the norm were as follows: −0.74/17% (PMV/PPD) for the calculation based on the real values of microclimatic parameters and 0.70/15.3% (PMV/PPD) for the calculation based on people’s thermal sensations. For applying the Fanger method for thermal comfort analysis in an educational institution in St. Petersburg, we upgraded the procedure, introducing a questionnaire survey. The mean PMV values calculated by the Fanger method were 0.16 lower than the PMV values obtained by the survey.

Effects of climate change are perceived in ever larger areas of the planet. Heat waves occur with increasing frequency, constituting a risk to the population, especially for the most sensitive subjects. Preventive information to the population on the characteristics of the phenomenon and on the behavior to be supported is the means to reduce the health risks. To monitor the intensity of heat and the physiological discomfort perceived by humans, there are indices based on the perception of meteorological parameters such as temperature and relative humidity. In this work, by applying the Thom Discomfort Index (TDI), the first bioclimatic characterization of the provinces that make up Sicily, a Mediterranean region defined as a hotspot for climate change, was performed by the authors. The nonparametric Mann–Kendall test was applied to the daily values of the TDI in all provinces in order to verify the presence of significant trends. The test results highlighted the existence of increasing trends, especially in the months of August and September, when the TDI value undergoes a significant increase due not only to high temperatures, as one might expect, but above all to a high humidity rate. When these two meteorological parameters reach certain values, the physiological discomfort from humid heat represents a risk to the population.
