Influence of three BALB/c substrain backgrounds on the skin tumor induction efficacy to DMBA and TPA cotreatment

Abstract: Differences in responsiveness of BALB/c substrains have been investigated in various fields, including diabetes induction, corpus callosum deficiency, virus-induced demyelinating disease, aggressive behavior and osteonecrosis. However, induction efficacy of skin tumor remains untried. We therefore investigated the influence of BALB/c substrain backgrounds on the skin tumor induction efficacy in response to DMBA (7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene) and TPA (12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate) cotreatment. Alterat… Show more

“…However, other tumor phenotypes, including histopathology, apoptotic protein levels and tumor-related protein levels, were similarly induced. These patterns were likewise observed in the anti-tumor response to cisplatin treatment [ 5 ]. In the current study, we examined for variations in the anti-tumor response of cisplatin in three BALB/c substrains bearing CT26 syngeneic tumors.…”

“…Furthermore, the BALB/cAnNCrl substrain was established from BALB/cJ and BALB/cByJ mice in the period 1950–1970 [ 4 ]. Recently, a new substrain (BALB/cKorl mice) was isolated from BALB/cJ, at the Department of Laboratory Animal Resources of the National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation (NIFDS, Chungju, Korea) [ 5 ].…”

“…Whole blood was collected directly from the heart, placed in heparinized tubes and allowed to clot for 30 min at room temperature. Thereafter, the blood was centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 min at 4 °C to obtain serum, which was stored at −80 °C for subsequent analysis, as previously described [ 27 ]. After perfusion, the organs were immediately excised and weighed.…”

“…The rats in all the groups were euthanized on day 14. After midline thoracotomy, whole blood and serum were prepared as previously described [ 34 ]. The left ventricle was catheterized using a 23-gage butterfly needle (Becton Dickinson, Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA), the femoral artery was incised and perfused with sterile saline at the rate of 10 mL/min for 3 min.…”
