Influence of Thyroid Hormones and Transforming Growth Factor-β1 on Cystatin C Concentrations

Abstract: Serum cystatin C concentrations are reported to increase in the hyperthyroid state. Serum concentrations of cystatin C and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) were measured in patients with thyroid dysfunction, and the effects of 3,5,3'-tri-iodothyronine (T(3)) and TGF-β1 on cystatin C production in human hepatoblastoma (Hep G2) cells were studied. Serum concentrations of cystatin C and TGF-β1 were significantly higher in patients with Graves' disease compared with control subjects. Significantly positive c… Show more

“…The study subjects were almost all patients with native kidney disease, so it may not be possible to generalize the results to healthy subjects. It has been reported that cystatin C levels were influenced by factors other than GFR, such as thyroid function [14,15], inflammation [5,6], smoking [6,8] and immunosuppressive therapy [16]. Multivariate analysis was not adjusted for the above factors in the present study.…”

“…Serum concentrations of TGFb1 were higher in patients with Graves' disease compared to controls and decreased after treatment for hyperthyroidism. Positive correlations were observed between thyroid hormones and TGFb1 in patients with thyroid dysfunction [55]. Endocrine glands are well vascularised and the structure of their vessels (fenestration of epithelium) facilitates the exchange of various substances, including hormones.…”

“…These capabilities have made it an attractive marker for estimating glomerular filtration [12-15]. However, the receipt of glucocorticoids, thyroid function, inflammation and obesity, rather than sex or age, may affect the measurement of serum CysC[16-18]. Recent studies have further suggested that serum CysC (sCysC) may be an early predictor for AKI and the prognosis of patients in cardiac surgery [19-22], intensive care [23, 24], radiocontrast administration settings [25] and emergency departments [26].…”
