Influence of training status and eNOS haplotypes on plasma nitrite concentrations in normotensive older adults: a hypothesis-generating study

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between 3 eNOS gene polymorphisms and training status (TS) in affecting plasma nitrite concentration (NO2) in normotensive adults over 50 years old. Resting blood pressure (BP) was measured in all participants (n = 101). Plasma was taken to analyze: lipid profile, nitrite concentration (NO2) and lipid peroxide levels (T-BARS). Also, genomic DNA was extracted from plasma for genotyping NOS3 polymorphisms (-786T>C; 894G>T; and VNTR in intron 4). TS was d… Show more

“…It has been reported that specific haplotype C-Glu-4b (''C'' of T-786C, ''Glu'' of Glu298Asp and ''4b'' of VNTR) is significantly associated with lower circulating NOx concentrations [39]. Recently, it has been reported that carriers of C-Glu showed increases in NO 2 concentration after training independent of VNTR [40]. Thus, haplotype analyses are warranted to clarify the influence of eNOS on arteriosclerotic parameters.…”

“…The investigation of functional fitness in populations older than forty years is a theme quite explored in literature [1][2][3][4] , since there is a decline in functional capacity from that age, represented by loss of muscle strength, levels of aerobic fitness, agility and balance 5,6 . Several studies involving test batteries to assess functional fitness are available [7][8][9][10] , among them the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) 10 test battery stands out, which is widely used in research involving physical exercise [11][12][13][14][15] .…”
