Influence of tranexamic acid on postoperative autologous blood retransfusion in primary total hip and knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Addition of TXA to a restrictive transfusion protocol makes the use of a postoperative blood salvage system in patients undergoing primary hip and knee arthroplasty unnecessary.

In 2014, Oremus et al randomized patients with reinfusion drains to either receive intravenous TA or placebo (saline) to evaluate the influence of TA on the amount of transfused autologous blood[25].They determined that the addition of TA significantly reduced the amount of autologous reinfusion compared to placebo.
