Influence of Waveform Characteristics on LiDAR Ranging Accuracy and Precision

Abstract: Time of flight (TOF) based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a technology for calculating distance between start/stop signals of time of flight. In lab-built LiDAR, two ranging systems for measuring flying time between start/stop signals include time-to-digital converter (TDC) that counts time between trigger signals and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that processes the sampled start/stop pulses waveform for time estimation. We study the influence of waveform characteristics on range accuracy and preci… Show more

“…Time-to-digital converters (TDCs) are vital components in numerous scientific applications, such as positron emission tomography (PET) [1][2][3][4][5][6], time-of-flight (ToF) image sensors [3][4][5][6][7], and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) [8][9][10]. Especially in ToF imaging and LiDAR applications, high-resolution TDCs affect overall performance.…”

“…This stress distribution can be approximately treated as an ellipse with tiny differences between the long axis and the minor axis. Hereby, determination of the ovality and formation of the three-dimensional visualization deformation nephogram are employed to indicate the radial deformation of the tunnel structure [33].…”

“…Far better results could be reached with a time of flight (ToF) distance sensor, which is typically used as a scanning device [12][13][14][15] rang finder [16][17][18] and gesture detection sensor [19]. The used VL53L0X module is capable of capturing distances up to a maximum range of 2 m with a very high accuracy.…”
