Influence of zonal dosimetry on prostate brachytherapy outcomes

Abstract: PurposeTo examine the influence of zone-specific dosimetry on outcomes during permanent prostate implantation (PI), where the peripheral zone (PZ) and transitional zone (TZ) may receive varying radiation doses.Material and methodsFour hundred and sixteen patients treated with I-125 PI (target dose: 144 Gy) between 1996 and 2003 were included in this Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved, retrospective analysis. Whole prostate (WP), TZ, and PZ were contoured, and zone-specific D90 and V100 were computed. Th… Show more

“…Real-time segmentation could also assist the urologist in needle positioning during biopsy [29]. Moreover, zonal and prostate segmentations are of utmost importance for planning (focal) therapy, such as brachytherapy [30] and high-intensity focused ultrasound [31], to clearly mark the capsule of the prostate in order to spare the tissue beyond that point. Moreover, it might also aid in the reviewing of elastography images or contrast-enhanced ultrasound videos in patients with a suspicion of prostate cancer.…”
