Influential factors for technology-enhanced learning: professionals’ views

Abstract: Purpose The literature includes several studies that define different critical success factors (CSF) which have to be considered to support the implementation of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) approaches. An analysis of such studies revealed that (1) regional differences seem to determine the CSF for TEL approaches, (2) certain CSF are relevant for TEL approaches in general, and (3) professionals in higher education determine which influential factors they consider when implementing TEL approaches. Thus, t… Show more

“…This means that observation from just one study centre amounts to a very small sample size. This according to Schweighofer et al (2019) jeopardises the generalisability and validity of study results. The authors also maintain that empirical data generated from surveys that usually rely participants' abilities to read and select responses without further interpretation by the researchers suffer from cognitive biases like social desirability.…”

“…Such shifts are the result of the use of the Internet and other digital technologies to enhance human learning. In fact, technology-enhanced learning (TEL) approaches have become widespread in the higher education subsector (Schweighofer et al , 2019) and have further escalated since the emergence of the novel corona virus 2019 (COVID-19). The current rise in the rate of development and deployment of different TEL approaches, particularly electronic learning (e-learning) by several organisations, including tertiary institutions, is reinforced by the desire to solve authentic, teaching, learning and performance problems.…”

“…TEL can be described as the use of computer-based technologies that support the learning process either locally or remotely (Sen & Leong, 2020). Patrick and Doris (2019) also have stated that TEL can be described as an environment that relies on technologies that have been developed and deployed in learning situations, which involves different activities such as communication and interactivity, knowledge, learning, entertainment, and exploration.…”

“…As mentioned by Sen and Leong (2020), the term TEL often used interchangeably with other synonyms to describe the usage of technologies that support human learning such as computer assisted instruction, digital technology, e-learning or educational technology. Although there are several other terms that were being used, TEL can be described as computer application or software, comprising of interrelated components that are able to assist and facilitate learners in the learning process whether individually or collaboratively (Patrick & Doris, 2019). Sen and Leong (2020) further explained that TEL is a computer application that is part of the learning system of the teaching and learning process, which aims to help students in their online learning.…”

“…However, previous studies primarily focused on similar TEL types such as virtual education, distant learning, etc. in higher education (Al-Nofaie, 2020;Bozavlı, 2021;Celik, 2013;Deris, Koon, & Salam, 2015;Kintu, Zhu, & Kagambe, 2017;Schweighofer et al, 2019;Yauri, Salam, & Kahar, 2016). Higher education has the educational purpose of improving students' overall academic achievements while a private education company has the business purpose of improving learners' particular skills.…”
