The concept of electronic trading (e-trading) has transformed supply chain interactions in many industries, yet little research explored its implementation by Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) supply chain firms. E-trading relies on commercial information exchange by supply chain partners which is generally adopted through intermediary technology partners (Hub Providers) to facilitate the accurate and timely communication of transactional data between buyers and supplier. A case study was conducted to explore the challenges and barriers to implementation of cross-firm commercial information exchange. The study primarily involved investigation of the interfaces between software development and organizational functions assisting with the electronic exchange of commercial information (eCIX) implementation. Findings from the case study show that implementation of commercial information exchange is not an easy task with several themes of factors to be considered during delivery of such projects, namely technical, coordination, integration and organizational. The study contributes to the knowledge and deployment of e-trading solutions within the context of AEC firms, and should be of interest to the practitioners contemplating similar projects.

Communication Key Performance Indicators for Selecting Construction Project Bidders

It is vital to select the right project bidders, as this affects the success of a project. Although there are numerous methods for assessing bidders, communication is rarely taken into account. This paper discusses the results of a survey on communication key performance indicators (KPI) and the success of construction projects. Data were collected from 390 construction partners in Spain. The results indicate that the most significant communication KPI is the quality of information: basically its accuracy and timeliness. In addition, experienced respondents placed less importance on communication flow structures and communication management than inexperienced respondents. Experienced respondents distrusted new trends and/or management theories and mainly relied on experience. The findings also reveal that the communication flow structure, the communication and information management plan and the channels of communication are relevant aspects for the success of a project. The results of this research can be used to assess bidders' communication abilities and systems.

A BIM-enabled Construction Project (BIMCP) refers to a project involving relevant BIM tools to generate, exchange and manage project data between project participants. Success in delivering BIMCPs largely relies on how effective project members collaborate. As a result, collaboration on BIMCP has become a growing field of research while a review of studies on collaboration on BIMCPs is still missing. To address this gap, this paper presents the findings of a systematic review on studies devoted to collaboration on BIMCPs over the past 10 years (2006-2016). To this end, 208 studies published in 12 ICT-oriented journals in the construction context are thoroughly reviewed. The findings bring to light that studies on collaboration on BIMCPs are sporadic, isolated and focus on narrowed, limited and disjointed areas associated with collaboration. The study contributes to the field through highlighting the gaps of the existing literature on the topic. This provides a stepping stone to direct future inquiries that target collaboration on BIMCPs.
