Information systems research with system dynamics

Abstract: Catering to the growing community of scholars and practitioners who research information systems (IS) with system dynamics (SD), this article sketches IS research with SD as a genuinely transdisciplinary area that studies the design, implementation, management and effects of IS on people, organizations and markets. A preamble to a fascinating collection of five applied-research contributions to this System Dynamics Review (SDR) special issue, the article charts IS research and places these contributions in the… Show more

“…System dynamics has been used to study information systems (Georgantzas & Katsamakas, 2008), project management (Cooper & Lee, 2009), and software project management (AbdelHamid, 1988;Abdel-Hamid & Madnick, 1991;Barros, Werner, & Travassos, 2000;Rodrigues & Williams, 1996). More specifically, system dynamics has been used to develop conceptual models to represent ERP post-implementation dynamic feedback between factors such as training, system usage, and benefits (Clark, Jones, & Zmud, 2009).…”

“…SD modeling is a powerful tool for organizational research [44,48,49,51] and has been widely used in IS research [9,11,12,15,41]. Compared to other organizational research methodologies, the strength of SD modeling lies in its exploration of feedback loops, timing delays, the nonlinearity associated with the process of organizational change [31,38], and its ability to generate insights into the dynamics of SOA implementation.…”
