Infra-red cryogenic studies. Part 13.—Halogenoalkanes in argon matrices

Abstract: Infra-red spectra are reported of the halogenomethanes and the C2 to C4 iodoalkanes isolated in argon matrices at 20K. The observed bands are correlated with the different conformers of the iodopropanes and iodobutanes. Concentration studies of the halogenomethanes in argon matrices show the growth of multimer bands, the predominant species being a linear dimer. The spectrum of solid fluoromethane is also reported. No evidence was found for rotation of fluoromethane in either argon or methane matrices. * iiqui… Show more

“…For CH 3 Cl the non-deuterated species was used, as spectral congestion was not an issue for this Lewis base. The assignment of CHF 2 I (Nagels et al, 2014), TMP (McKean et al, 1990), TMP-d 9 (Michielsen et al, 2012), DMS (Hauchecorne et al, 2011), DMS-d 6 (Michielsen et al, 2012) and CH 3 Cl (Futami et al, 2004;Duncan & Law, 1990; Barnes et al, 1973;Jones et al, 1966) is primarily based on experimental studies available in the literature, aided by ab initio calculations, for which the results can be found in Tables S3 to S9 of the supporting information.…”

“…These new bands, sets D and E, are readily assigned by comparison to authentic spectra. Set D bands are assigned to CH 3 Cl and the HCl complex of CH 3 Cl. This species was observed as the thermal decomposition product of Cl 3 TiOCH 3 , and the present study demonstrates that it is also formed in the thermal decomposition of Cl 2 V(O)OCH 3 .…”

“…It is noteworthy that no CH 3 Cl was seen as a product in these matrix experiments. 23 In the reaction of TiCl 4 and CH 3 OH similar pyrolysis experiments were peformed. 13 Above 250 C TiCl 3 OCH 3 was destroyed and CH 3 Cl 13,23 was formed.…”

“…23 In the reaction of TiCl 4 and CH 3 OH similar pyrolysis experiments were peformed. 13 Above 250 C TiCl 3 OCH 3 was destroyed and CH 3 Cl 13,23 was formed. It is clear that SiCl 3 OCH 3 is more thermally stable than is TiCl 3 OCH 3 and that, while some decomposes to give CH 3 Cl (as shown by mass spectrometry) other decomposition pathways exist.…”
