Infrastructural Inequality and Household COVID-19 Vulnerability in a South African Urban Settlement

Abstract: COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of household infrastructure in containing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, with Global South urban settlements particularly vulnerable. Targeted interventions have used area or dwelling type as proxies for infrastructural vulnerability, potentially missing vulnerable households. We use infrastructural determinants of COVID-19 (crowding, water source, toilet facilities, and indoor pollution) to create an Infrastructural Vulnerability Index using cross-sectional household data (2… Show more

“…Low socioeconomic status signifies more vulnerability in several aspects, as it means less opportunity to access adaptive resources, such as safe outdoor activities and healthy food, and also less access to the healthcare system [50][51][52]. “…Percebe-se, neste estudo, que indicadores de vulnerabilidade social podem ser influenciadores do aumento de casos de COVID-19. Em pesquisa realizada nos bairros de Fortaleza, Ceará, evidenciou-se que os indicadores possuíam influência na incidência da COVID-19 na metrópole, ou seja, quanto maior o nível de escolaridade, menor é o risco de contrair o vírus (19,20,21) .…”

“…In a big and diverse country like India, lack of vaccine convenience would be a serious impediment to vaccine uptake. Vaccine convenience is marked by the rural–urban divide (Sun & Monnat, 2022), technological divide (Sharma, 2021), infrastructural inequalities (Marcus & Marcus, 2022), and so on and all of these would lead to vaccine hesitancy. According to reports in India, urban centers managed to receive the lion’s share of the vaccine leaving a large rural population vulnerable to the deadly coronavirus (Ray, 2022).…”
