Inhibition of API 5L X52 Pipeline Steel Corrosion in Acidic Medium by Gemini Surfactants: Electrochemical Evaluation and Computational Study

Abstract: The efficiency of three new synthesized Gemini surfactants (namely, A312, A314, and A316) of the type 4,4-[1,4phenylenebis(azanylylidene)bis(N,N-dimethyl-N-alkylaminium] bromide is evaluated as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel API 5L X52 grade in 1M HCl. The relation between the experimental inhibition efficiency and theoretical chemical parameters obtained by computational calculation in order to predict the behavior of the organic compounds as corrosion inhibitors was instigated. The chemical structures… Show more

“…Surfactant efficiency as corrosion inhibitors has recently been extensively researched in various media and for the protection of multiple metals, leading to studies on organicbased corrosion inhibitors [13][14][15]. Gemini surfactants, which are new generation quaternized salt surfactants composed of two surfactant monomers joined together by a spacer group, have been thoroughly investigated in corrosion investigations [16,17]. For instance, innovative cationic Gemini surfactants produced for C-steel pipeline corrosion inhibition in 1 M HCl media [18] shown a potent inhibition effectiveness.…”

“…Recently, the effectiveness of surfactants as corrosion inhibitors has been widely investigated in different mediums and for the protection of several metals, contributing to approximately 24% of organic-based corrosion inhibitor studies [ 22 , 23 , 24 ]. As new generation surfactants of quaternized salts, consisting of two surfactant monomers linked together through a spacer group, Gemini surfactants have been extensively examined in corrosion studies [ 25 , 26 ]. For instance, novel cationic Gemini surfactants synthesized for corrosion inhibition in the context of C-steel pipelines in 1 M HCl medium by Hegazy et al [ 27 ] exhibited a strong inhibition efficiency, reaching 93.7%.…”

“…In addition, different pH values and concentrations of various exposed solutions affect the corrosion behavior of heat-treated samples (Sharma and Chhibber 2019). Hamed et al conducted a comparative study between theoretical chemical parameters and experimental inhibition efficiency of Gemini surfactants for carbon steel API 5L X52 grade (Hamed et al 2019).…”
