Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the major microvascular complications of diabetes, and mitochondrial dysfunction has been observed in the kidneys of diabetic patients. Tilapia skin peptides (TSPs) are mixtures of small-molecular-weight peptides derived from tilapia skin. Rising evidence suggests that bioactive peptides from marine sources are beneficial for DN. This study aimed to investigate whether TSPs can alleviate the pathological progress in experimental DN by improving mitochondrial dysfunction through the activation of Bnip3/Nix signaling. In the current study, TSPs treatment alleviated the metabolic parameters and renal morphology in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Additionally, TSPs treatment significantly activated Bnip3/Nix signaling and improved the mitochondrial morphology, reversed the over-production of mitochondrial superoxide and cellular reactive oxygen species and the decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, thereby inhibiting the expressions of fibronectin, collagen IV and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 in glomerular mesangial cells induced by high glucose. Collectively, our results suggest that TSPs show the renoprotective effect on DN by improving mitochondrial dysfunction, and they can be a potential therapeutic strategy for DN.

EZY‐1 is an antifibrosis peptide purified from Eucheuma. In this study, we explored the acute toxicology of EZY‐1 and the signaling pathways involved in its antifibrotic role. The mouse model of pulmonary fibrosis was induced by bleomycin. Pathological changes in lung tissue could be effectively inhibited by EZY‐1. Acute toxicity and cell proliferation tests indicated that EZY‐1 had no apparent toxicity to mice and cells. We identified proteins that could bind directly to EZY‐1 in vitro on the basis of liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry and bioinformatics analysis. EZY‐1 inhibited pulmonary fibrosis via Wnt/β‐catenin, transforming growth factor (TGF)‐β/Smad, phosphoinositide 3‐kinase/protein kinase B/ mammalian target of rapamycin, and activator of transcription 3 and Janus kinase 2/signal transducer pathways. A transwell micropore experiment showed that EZY‐1 could inhibit cell migration and invasion. Western blotting analysis on transforming growth factor‐β1 (TGF‐β1)‐induced A549 pulmonary fibrosis cell model suggested that EZY‐1 could downregulate p‐Smad3 (Ser423/Ser425), Smad4, β‐catenin, vimentin, and N‐cadherin expression. ELISA showed that EZY‐1 could inhibit collagen‐I secretion. EZY‐1 alleviated idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) through regulating TGF‐β/Smad pathways, epithelial‐mesenchymal transition processes, and collagen secretion, which provides a potential foundation for theoretical development of EZY‐1 as a potential drug against IPF. Practical applications We isolated a new 16‐amino‐acid peptide derived from the polypeptide extract of Eucheuma, named EZY‐1. In vitro and in vivo assays show peptide EZY‐1 is safe. The EZY‐1 peptide alleviates IPF at lower doses than pirfenidone. EZY‐1 alleviated idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) through regulating TGF‐β/Smad pathways, epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) processes, and collagen secretion, which provides a theoretical basis for the development of EZY‐1 as a potential drug against IPF.

Many lay people along with some so called "key opinion leaders" have a common slogan "There's no answer for cancer". Again, mistake delays proper treatment and make situation worse, more often. Compliance is crucial to obtain optimal health outcomes, such as cure or improvement in QoL. Patients may delay treatment or fail to seek care because of high out-of-pocket expenditures. Despite phenomenal development, conventional therapy falls short in cancer management. There are two major hurdles in anticancer drug development: dose-limiting toxic side effects that reduce either drug effectiveness or the QoL of patients and complicated drug development processes that are costly and time consuming. Cancer patients are increasingly seeking out alternative medicine and might be reluctant to disclose its use to their oncology treatment physicians. But there is limited available information on patterns of utilization and efficacy of alternative medicine for patients with cancer. As adjuvant therapy, many traditional medicines shown efficacy against brain, head and neck, skin, breast, liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, prostate, colon and blood cancers. The literature reviews non-pharmacological interventions used against cancer, published trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
