Inhibition of Colon Carcinogenesis by Dietary Non-Nutritive Compounds

Abstract: Dietary habit is instrumental in about 50% of human colorectal cancers. Consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with decreased risk of several types of cancer, including colorectal malignancy. These foods contain many non-nutritive as well as nutritive compounds, such as carotenoids, dithiolthiones, flavonoids, glucosinolates, indoles, isothiocyanates, monoterpenes, phenols, sterols, sulfhydryls and vitamins (including C, E and folate). There may be other unknown non-nutritive constituents in foods … Show more

“…These chemopreventive agents may target cellular alterations associated with tumorigenesis by anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities and also modulating cell signaling pathways which may lead to inhibition of cell proliferation, cell growth and induction of apoptosis (Gerhauser, 2008). Feeding non-nutritive compounds reduced certain type of cancers in animals via induction of Phase II enzymes, scavenging ROS, suppression of cell proliferation, inhibiting cell invasion (Tanaka et al, 2001;Tanaka and Sugie, 2007) and induction of cytotoxicity (Fresco et al, 2010). In vitro cell culture using the Caco-2 cell line is a well-developed model for studying the effect of phytochemicals on growth inhibition in human colonic adenocarcinoma as part of chemopreventive strategies.…”

“…CRC in humans is in many cases related to feeding habits: dietary substances such as saturated fats and ω-6 fatty acids favor the development of dysplasia in the crypts of the colonic mucosa and can promote carcinogenesis, while diets rich in polyunsaturated fat, -3 and ω-9 fatty acids, insoluble fibers, certain vitamins (D, A, C, E and β-carotene), minerals (calcium, selenium) and antioxidants (folates, flavonoids) may reduce the incidence [16][17][18] . It is estimated that CRC is causally associated with environmental factors, especially diet-related factors, in 80% of cases 19 .…”

“…We suspected that hesperidin in CUSM may therefore be responsible for the inhibition of preneoplasia development in male db/db mice, because this chemical can inhibit chemically-induced colon carcinogenesis in rodents. 19 An association between diabetes and cancer was suggested over 100 years ago. 42 The increased incidence of CRC in diabetic patients, mainly in those with type 2 diabetes, has been supported by a recent prospective, population-based cohort, case-control and meta-analysis studies.…”

“…19 However, few studies have so far been performed on the preventive effect of food components on obesity/diabetes-related colon carcinogenesis. 20,21 We recently have made the citrus unshiu segment membranes (CUSMs) that are rich in soluble and insoluble fiber and separate the juice vesiculates, from Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.).…”
