Inhibitory effects of different fractions of Nepeta satureioides on melanin synthesis through reducing oxidative stress

Abstract: Nepeta satureioides Boiss. has been used in traditional medicine of eastern countries and is famous for its medicinal properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of methanol (MeOH), n-hexane and dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) fractions of the extract on melanin synthesis and oxidative stress in B16F10 melanoma cell line. The B16F10 cell line viability after treatment with increasing concentrations of different fractions of the plant (5-60 μg/mL) was measured using MTT assay. The inhibitory effect on… Show more

“…N. cataria is one of the most investigated species of this genus, the results of which confirm its traditional applications [24]. Recent studies have reported promising activities for the Nepeta binaludensis Jamzad and Nepeta satureioides Boiss extracts, e.g., inhibition of melanogenesis and antioxidant activity [24,27]. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the phytochemical composition and to assess the antioxidant, cytotoxic, antifungal, and antibacterial activities of the methanolic, ethanolic, and water extracts of the roots, leaves, and flowers of N. juncea Benth.…”

“…showed the aerial parts of P. atlantica have the powerful antioxidant properties(36). Also MeOH and CH 2 Cl 2 fractions of Nepeta satureioides indicated potential effects against melanin production in B16F10 melanoma cells and may contribute in cosmetic formulations of skin care products(37). The derivatives of kojic acid had inhibitory activity on tyrosinase.…”

“…Nepeta saturejoides (Fig. 4D), locally called "Ostokhodous," is an aromatic and medicinal plant traditionally considered as carminative and used for treating common cold and sinusitis (Emami et al 2017, Hadian et al 2006. Local people utilized N. saturejoides as herbal tea and sedative, and also for treatment of mental problems, foot pain, sore throat, anemia, asthma, common cold, kidney stones, cramps, and muscle injuries.…”
