Initial attachment of Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes to Vero cells

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Adhesion is the initial process in the establishment of any infection and can contribute to bacterial pathogenesis. Without the ability to adhere to host cell surface, there is no invasion, dissemination, or persistence and host colonization by many bacterial pathogens, including B. burgdorferi. During the infection, B. burgdorferi cells interact with cells of various origins. We are having limited information and knowledge regarding the borrelial invasion, intracellular existence and the host cell… Show more

“…The early initiation of antibiotic therapy can influence the course of the disease and often determines its further development. The positive effect of treatment depends on the time and stage of infection, application of effective antibiotics, and adherence to the recommended duration of drug administration (12). Antibiotic therapy is successful when administered in the early stages of Lyme disease.…”

“…In European countries, on average, 0.4-67% of ticks are infected with pathogens such as Ehrlichia and Anaplasma (12). For Anaplasma, manifestations such as cranial nerve palsy, brachial plexopathy, demyelinating polyneuropathy, and bilateral facial nerve palsy have been confirmed.…”

“…Unfortunately, kidney samples were not included in any of those studies. This indicates the need for further studies to determine which Treponema species can invade the kidney, as seen with other spirochetes such as T. pallidum [ 49 ], Borrelia burgdorferi [ 50 ] and Leptospira [ 51 ]. The presence of DD-associated Treponema spp.…”
