Initial clinical experience with a biofragmentable ring for sutureless bowel anastomosis

Abstract: Twenty-seven patients have had bowel anastomoses with a biofragmentable ring for sutureless bowel anastomosis. There were no complications associated with the anastomotic technique. One patient developed an ischemic stricture on the proximal side of the anastomosis due to compromised circulation. There was no leakage. Technical factors regarding the BAR anastomosis are described. A properly placed purse-string suture is of primary importance. Advantages appear to be a more rapid and easy anastomosis with bette… Show more

“…The development of the ring is based on the principles of the Murphy’s button, first described in 1892 [9]. In 1987 Hardy and coworkers [5]introduced the BAR. The bowel ends are tied over the two separate parts of the ring and then pressed together.…”

“…Even the introduction of stapling devices and new developments in surgical sutures did not decrease the local complication rate substantially. In 1987 Hardy et al [5]introduced the biofragmentable anastomosis ring (BAR) as a new technique in gastrointestinal surgery and gave new impulses to anastomotic research. Except for the upper esophagus, the BAR is suitable in all gastrointestinal regions.…”

“…A coupled pair of waveguides [18] and a ring resonant geometry [19,20] are used to obtain decoupling and a FOV matched to annular wounds. The resulting sensor has the potential for eventual implantation in a two-part biofragmentable anastomosis ring (BAR) [21,22]. The electrical design is described in Section 2, and the FOV is discussed in Section 3.…”
