Initial performance of the CUORE-0 experiment

Abstract: CUORE-0 is a cryogenic detector that uses an array of tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130 Te. We present the first data analysis with 7.1 kg · y of total TeO 2 exposure focusing on background measurements and energy resolution. The background rates in the neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest (2.47 to 2.57 MeV) and in the α backgrounddominated region (2.70 to 3.90 MeV) have been measured to be 0.071 ± 0.011 and 0.019 ± 0.002 counts/(keV · kg · y), respe… Show more

“…On the other hand, the peaks in the α region are attributed to bulk contaminations of the TeO 2 crystals, while the other structures are attributed to surface contamination of the TeO 2 crystals and/or the close materials. The energy resolution evaluated on the 208 Tl line at 2615 keV is 5.2 keV FWHM, half-way between the improved performance of phase II and the 5.7 keV measured during phase I [34]. The continuum from 2.7 to 3.9 MeV, excluding the only clearly visible peak ascribed to 190 Pt, is attributed to degraded particles that deposit only a fraction of their energy in the crystal and the rest in inactive materials.…”

“…More details on the CUORE-0 data taking and analysis procedures can be found in [34,35]. CUORE-0 data taking started in March 2013, though in non optimal conditions, after a troubled preparation of the detector which identified unexpected flaws in the CUORE preparation procedures that were then fixed.…”

“…The overall detector resolution was found to be 5.7 keV [20]. During some R&D runs the target energy resolution of 5 keV was consistently achieved [4], and in phase II of CUORE-0 reached 4.8 keV.…”
