Initial transverse-momentum broadening of Breit-Wheeler process in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract: We calculate the cross section and transverse-momentum (P ⊥ ) distribution of the Breit-Wheeler process in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and their dependence on collision impact parameter (b). To accomplish this, the Equivalent Photon Approximation (EPA) was generalized in a more differential way compared to the approach traditionally used for inclusive collisions. In addition, a lowest-order QED calculation with straightline assumption was performed as a standard baseline for comparison. The cross section… Show more

“…The model by Kłusek-Gawenda et al uses EPA and Woods-Saxon nuclear form factors [1,20]. Zhangbu et al provide calculations using a generalized EPA (gEPA) approach which results in an impact parameter dependent p T,ee shape of the spectra [21,22]. In addition, Zhangbu et al carried out a full leading order QED calculation [22].…”

“…Apart from including resolution effects in the model calculations, an extension of the analysis in terms of mass and centrality range is foreseen, which should allow for more differential studies. These may address the geometry of the initial electromagnetic field and its fluctuations, effects of the strong magnetic field, and interactions with the medium [9,21,23,24]. Data recorded in 2018 are currently becoming available and will approximately double the data set size in peripheral collision, which will further benefit these analyses.…”

“…There are hints that the muons undergo electromagnetic interactions with the dense QCD medium, seen by p T broadening of dimuon spectra [5]. However, this broadening can also be described by photo-production [6]. Regardless of the physical origin, the scale of these p T -modifications is negligible compared to the average momentum of the muons, which is about half of the Z-boson mass.…”
