Injectable Hemostat Composed of a Polyphosphate-Conjugated Hyaluronan Hydrogel

Abstract: We have developed a new hydrogel hemostat composed of hyaluronan (HA) conjugated with inorganic polyphosphate (PolyP). A hemostatic hydrogel, HAX-PolyP, was formed rapidly by mixing aldehyde-modified HA and hydrazide-modified HA conjugated with PolyP (HA-PolyP). Although the gelation rate decreased with increasing PolyP content, the gelation time was below 5 min. In addition, the hydrogel swelling volume decreased with increasing PolyP content, but the degradation rate did not depend on PolyP content and the h… Show more

“…[9,10] Particularly, some injectable hydrogels have been developed to be used as minimally invasive surgery sealants/adhesives because they can easily deliver and conform to the complex contour of tissue sites. [11][12][13][14] Despite these recent developments, there is currently a paucity of reports on the injectable hydrogel sealants/adhesives that can be detached from the adhered tissues on demand. The on-demand detachment of surgical sealants/ adhesives is important to make the materials reusable and harmless toward the surrounding tissues.…”

“…Energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis of C, O, and Ca elements for MSS@CaCO 3 with aspect ratio of 1:1 also confirmed the synthesis of CaCO 3 Figure 2E shows the FTIR spectra of Janus particles. Peaks at 1187-1280 and 961-1052 cm −1 , respectively, correspond to the symmetric stretching of the PO and P-O-C bonds [38] from the starch phosphate, indicating modification of MS with STMP. Typical peaks of calcite CaCO 3 were observed at 875, 848, and 712 cm −1 , while peaks at 1087 and 745 cm −1 could be assigned to vaterite CaCO 3 .…”

“…Biocompatibility of the composite hydrogel in vitro and in vivo was demonstrated by viability assays of three cell lines (macrophages, fibroblasts and mesothelial cells) and by intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections. In addition, the hydrogels showed similar hemostatic effects compared to fibrin glue in a mise liver hemorrhage model ( Sakoda et al, 2018 ).…”
