The purpose of the paper is to present the design of a new plastic part and injection process simulation. Workflow in virtual modelling and simulations in CAx system was presented on an example of the trolley plastic car for kids. The model of the plastic car was designed and simulated to determine the injection parameters in SolidWorks environment. Based on the 3D model of the product the mould tool was created. From the virtual testing the most suitable injection point location, material temperature as well as the fill time and required injection pressure have been specified. With these results the designers can avoid anomalies or defects in real plastic things with the actual injection process parameters, like: air traps, weld lines and sink marks. Such analyses allow the designer to develop a proper mould 3D model, to save the mould setup time as well as to reduce the cost for manufacturing the mould.

On-stream inspections are the most appropriate method for routine inspections during plant operation without undergoing production downtime. Ultrasonic inspection, one of the on-stream inspection methods, faces challenges when performed at high temperatures exceeding the recommended 52 °C. This study aims to determine the ultrasonic velocity and attenuation with known material grade, thickness, and temperatures by comparing theoretical calculation and experimentation, with temperatures ranging between 30 °C to 250 °C on low-carbon steel, covering most petrochemical equipment material and working conditions. The aim of the theoretical analysis was to obtain Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and longitudinal velocity at different temperatures. The experiments validated the theoretical results of ultrasonic change due to temperature increase. It was found that the difference between the experiments and theoretical calculation is 3% at maximum. The experimental data of velocity and decibel change from the temperature range provide a reference for the future when dealing with unknown materials information on site that requires a quick corrosion status determination.

The process of polymer injection moulding is complex and complicated, therefore it is characterised by a number of technological and material parametersthat influence the product quality. Setting the best injection conditions requires knowledge of the processing properties of the material, mould shape and technological capacity of the injection moulding machine. Injection shrinkage, as undesirable phenomenon, causes changes of the shape and dimensions of the injection moulding; therefore, it is one of the most important problems that have to be solved, both at the phase of mould designing and at selecting the technological parameters of injection. The paper presents classification of injection moulding shrinkage as well as factors influencing the value of the shrinkage. The conducted experimental tests were related to selected topics connected with the injection process and took into account the change of the processed material characteristics (type and amount of filler) and change of certain, relatively the simplest to regulate, injecting parameters (injection time and cooling of the piece in a mould). Geometrical dimensions of the injection mouldings produced from polypropylene filled with glass fibre were measured using two methods: tactile (electronic measuring instrument) and contactless (3D scanning). The analysis of injection shrinkage illustrates that an effective influence on its value is possible by both choosing appropriate conditions of the injection within the technical range of the machine, as well as, if needed, the processing properties of material can be modified in order to obtain a moulded piece of set geometrical and strength properties. After the analysis of the results, the connection between the injection moulding shrinkage and the content of the filler and the chosen parameters of injection was established.
