Objective Methods Interviews were held with the aid of a questionnaire administered to a probabilistic sample of 210 individuals (125 from city hall and 85 from the private firm). Results A high number of motorcyclists in both categories combined (78.6%) suffered traffic accidents in the 12 months prior to the inquiry. Collisions with automobiles constituted the most frequent type of accident (43.6%). Accidents were more associated with motorcyclists working for city hall (p < 0.05), due mainly to the fact that these individuals had been employed for a longer period of time (p < 0.001). The occurrence of bodily injuries was high in both categories (63.6%). Facial injuries were the least frequent in both categories due mainly to the use of protection equipment (98.2%). ConclusionThe occurrence of traffic accidents was high in the two motorcycle passenger transportation categories analyzed, demonstrating that motorcycles are used to transport passengers in a risky manner.

Este artículo tiene como propósito develar las percepciones que construyen los habitantes de los municipios de Arjona, Turbaco, El Carmen De Bolívar y Magangué, del departamento de Bolívar, sobre los efectos económicos, sociales y ambientales de la dinámica del oficio de mototaxismo, así como la efectividad de las acciones llevadas a cabo por las autoridades municipales y departamentales para su control. La estrategia metodológica empleada fue de corte cualitativo, a fin de visibilizar las voces de los actores locales que interactúan y se relacionan con el territorio en su cotidianidad. Para ello se desarrollaron entrevistas semi-estructuradas, dirigidas a usuarios y no usuarios del servicio de mototaxis y transportadores públicos y privados, así como grupos focales, conformados por funcionarios públicos de las alcaldías municipales. Los resultados muestran que, si bien el oficio de mototaxismo ha facilitado la movilidad tanto de las personas como de la mercancía de productores y comerciantes locales (formales e informales), ha generado conflictos sobre quién o quienes pueden transportar personas y mercancías, dada la legitimación de un oficio informal e ilegal que genera consecuencias al servicio de transporte legal. El oficio también ha traído consigo efectos ambientales, reflejados en la calidad del aire, conservación del suelo rural, el atractivo visual del municipio y la audición de la población. Respecto a las medidas de regulación de oficio del mototaxismo, se infiere un bajo conocimiento de ellas. Quienes indican conocerlas, consideran son poco efectivas, puesto que son transitorias y, en algunos casos, carecen de planificación.

Effective transport infrastructure is an essential component of economic integration, accessibility to vital social services and a means of mitigation in times of emergency. Rural areas in Africa are largely characterized by poor transport infrastructure. This poor state of rural road networks contributes to the vulnerability of communities in developing countries by hampering access to vital social services and opportunities. In addition, maps of road networks are incomplete, and not up-to-date. Lack of accurate maps of village-level road networks hinders determination of access to social services and timely response to emergencies in remote locations. In some countries in sub-Saharan Africa, communities in rural areas and some in urban areas have devised an alternative mode of public transport system that is reliant on motorcycle taxis. This new mode of transport has improved local mobility and has created a vibrant economy that depends on the motorcycle taxi business. The taxi system also offers an opportunity for understanding local-level mobility and the characterization of the underlying transport infrastructure. By capturing the spatial and temporal characteristics of the taxis, we could design detailed maps of rural infrastructure and reveal the human mobility patterns that are associated with the motorcycle taxi system. In this study, we tracked motorcycle taxis in a rural area in Kenya by tagging volunteer riders with Global Positioning System (GPS) data loggers. A semi-automatic method was applied on the resulting trajectories to map rural-level road networks. The results showed that GPS trajectories from motorcycle taxis could potentially improve the maps of rural roads and augment other mapping initiatives like OpenStreetMap.
