Innate and adaptive immune escape mechanisms of hepatitis B virus

Abstract: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is an international health problem with extremely high mortality and morbidity rates. Although current clinical chronic hepatitis B (CHB) treatment strategies can partly inhibit and eliminate HBV, viral breakthrough may result due to non-adherence to treatment, the emergence of viral resistance, and a long treatment cycle. Persistent CHB infection arises as a consequence of complex interactions between the virus and the host innate and adaptive immune systems. Therefor… Show more

“…In the process of early virus clearance and specific immune response, the innate immune response is greatly important, whose deficiency is an important reason for presistent HBV infection. HBV has evolved an active strategy to actively evade the natural immune recognition or actively interfere with the natural immune signaling pathway to induce immune suppression, which is conducive to self-replication ( 9 ).…”

“…Viremia lasting for 6 months or more, is considered persistent HCV infection. 115 , 116 HCV uses a variety of methods to evade the immune system, resulting in immune system evasion and infection persistence. 117 T cell function is lost in chronic T cell stimulation, which is the first main mechanism of chronic infection.…”

“…In addition to efficient immune evasion, the virus seems to actively suppress different signalling pathways that are activated in response to innate sensing of a viral infection. Most of these effects are the result of direct interactions of the viral proteins, and of HBV-induced miRNAs [ 71 , 72 , 73 ]. For example, direct immunosuppression by HbsAg itself, which is the main component of HBV-SVPs, has been reported [ 74 , 75 ].…”
