Innovative Topical Formulations for Treatment of Dermatitis

Abstract: The treatment of dermatitis with conventional dosage forms (ointment, cream, lotion etc.) has many concerns due to side effects especially in long-term therapy. Recent studies focused on strategies to optimize the potency of formulation while minimizing side effects. Several attempts have been made to increase the safety of treatment, including special vehicles (nanoparticle, liposome, patch etc.), combined therapy and new synthesized agents. This review provides major innovations and advances of new approache… Show more

“…These formulations have been proposed to increase percutaneous absorption of therapeutic agents as well as reducing the damage to the skin barrier function. [8][9][10][11] A desired formulation for this purpose should ideally be able to pass through the stratum corneum (SC) and be able to maintain therapeutically relevant concentrations in the epidermis/dermis, without high serum levels and systemic exposure.…”

“…The combination of nanostructured therapeutic agents in NPs with dosage forms is yet a new and little-explored alternative for delivering NPs [111]. These NPs can be incorporated into dosage forms such as creams [112,113] ointments and hydrogels [114,115], patches [113,116] for topical penetration [115,117,118].…”

“…DFV is a highly potent topical corticosteroid; however, in the classification of topical corticosteroids, potency is linked to side effects. Therefore, DFV as a high potent corticosteroid, has many side effects (Senyigit et al, 2012).…”
