Insect Vectors of Rice Yellow Mottle Virus

Abstract: Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) is the major viral constraint to rice production in Africa. RYMV was first identified in 1966 in Kenya and then later in most African countries where rice is grown. Several studies have been conducted so far on its evolution, pathogenicity, resistance genes, and especially its dissemination by insects. Many of these studies showed that, among RYMV vectors, insects especially leaf-feeders found in rice fields are the major source of virus transmission. Many studies have shown tha… Show more

“…Ajayi and Oboite [ 5 ] noted that heavy infestation by P. costalis could kill seedlings and cause the stunting of mature plants. In addition, this spittlebug has the potential to act as a vector of plant diseases [ 7 ] and has been reported as a vector of rice yellow mottle disease [ 8 ]. Several methods including the use of synthetic chemical insecticides and biopesticides have been used to control this pest [ 6 ].…”

“…RYMV disease is transmitted when the sap of infected leaves comes into contact with the cells of healthy leaves ( Séré et al., 2013 ). It is transmitted by livestock as they graze from field to field ( Ochola and Tusiime 2011 ), by insects ( Koudamiloro et al. 2015 , 2019 ) and by wind ( Sarra et al., 2004 ).…”

“…It is mainly found in irrigated lowlands as confirmed in this study. These 4 important insect species were also RYMV vectors according several studies (Koudamiloro et al, 2015). Among the entomofauna in the South and Central rice basin of Benin, natural enemies found were predators and parasitoids.…”

“…Eighty species belonging to 8 orders were identified in the rice basin of Southern and Central Benin. About a quarter of recorded insect species were already identified as vectors (Nwilene, 1999;Koudamiloro et al, 2014;Koudamiloro et al, 2015). Sixty species representing three quarter of the total species were found at least in two sites.…”
