Insight into biosorption of heavy metals by extracellular polymer substances and the improvement of the efficacy: a review

Abstract: Significance and Impact of the Study: Extracellular polymer substances (EPS) are a type of green, environmentally friendly and efficient heavy metals biosorbents. The purpose of our review is to summarize the research content of EPS adsorption of heavy metals, especially the method to strengthen the process, and provide ideas for further research.

“…ExoR/ExoS/ChvI form a major regulatory circuit that regulates exo gene expression, with ExoS activating ChvI through phosphorylation, which in turn activates exo gene expression [ 159 , 160 ]. ExoR inhibits the synthesis of ExoS thereby suppressing the production of EPS [ 161 , 162 ]. In addition, when plants are nitrogen deficient, the nitrogen metabolism regulatory protein NtrC is induced and the expression of NodD3 is activated by SyrM and vice versa, enhancing the synthesis of Nod factors.…”

“…Hg 2+ removal from wastewater is mainly carried out through precipitation/coprecipitation, as it is a robust method towards water hardness and the presence of other contaminants; however, it is expensive and often coupled with adsorption as a polishing technology. Membrane filtration is expensive, sensitive to other contaminants, and produces a large volume of residues, while other methods such as ion exchange, reverse osmosis, complexation/sequestration, and electrochemical operations are commercially impractical, inefficient, expensive, and yield toxic intermediate products [ 1 , 8 ]. Currently, adsorption is considered a cost-effective technology for the treatment of heavy metals in wastewater that has several advantages over conventional methods due to high efficiency, low cost, ease of operation, the possibility of metal recovery, and adsorbent regeneration as well as no secondary pollution.…”

“…Bacterial ExPs find their successful applications in heavy metal removal, oil recovery, and various in situ remediation techniques such as emulsifiers, sorbents, biofilters, surfactants, and bioflocculants [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. The interest of environmental researchers in ExP-producing bacteria is also highlighted in several patent deposits focusing on the prosperous application of bacteria in the remediation of contaminated sites.…”
