“…Results from Duong et al [19 ▪▪ ] suggest that those in the lowest COI quintile (i.e., highest level of social disadvantage) may be at particularly high risk of poorer outcomes. Further, results from neighborhood and patient-level analyses in the Mayourian et al [20 ▪▪ ] study revealed that neighborhood-level indices associated with longer length of stay (i.e., food and housing insecurity, lack of health insurance, lower socioeconomic status, and lower parental literacy and education) were also associated with increased risk for mortality. At the patient-level, children with public insurance and those with Spanish-speaking caregivers had higher mortality rates [20 ▪▪ ].…”

“…The role of SDOH on surgical and in-hospital outcomes has been explored in samples of children undergoing surgery for congenital heart disease, orthopedic surgery, or appendectomy. In children undergoing congenital heart disease surgery, higher social disadvantage, as measured by the COI, was shown to be associated with longer length of stay and likelihood of in-hospital mortality [19 ▪▪ ,20 ▪▪ ]. Myourian et al [20 ▪▪ ] conducted additional analyses to identify neighborhood and patient-level variables that accounted for the association between social disadvantage and length of stay.…”

“…The impact of SDOH on surgical and other early-childhood outcomes in CHD is too broad to adequately cover in this review. It is worth noting that there is extensive research into the disparities that exist in a variety of health outcomes, including surgical mortality, medical complications, and neurodevelopmental outcomes for children living with CHD [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34]. In a broad systematic review of the literature, SDOHs are found to be "significantly associated with adverse outcomes across the lifespan of CHD patients.…”
