Insights into the Supercritical CO2 Extraction of Perilla Oil and Its Theoretical Solubility

Abstract: In the current research, the supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) procedure was used to extract volatile oils from perilla leaves. The yields of the volatile oils and the four main constituents, limonene, perillaldehyde, β-caryophyllene, and (Z,E)-α-farnesene obtained by the SCCO2 procedure were 1.31-, 1.12-, 1.04-, 1.05-, and 1.07-fold higher than those obtained by the hydrodistillation technique, respectively. Furthermore, the duration and temperature of extraction were 40 min and 45 °C lower, respectively, … Show more

“…Perilla seed oil is now used to make health care drugs, such as capsules and oil drops, in China. Several extraction methods of the perilla oil were investigated, such as solvent extraction, aqueous enzymatic extraction, mechanical pressing and supercritical extraction 8) . Supercritical extraction and aqueous enzymatic extraction methods are costly, and solvent extraction is effective and commonly used.…”

“…The existing techniques used for oil extraction from seed of different origins include soxhlet extraction, organic solvent extraction, cold-pressing, aqueous enzymatic extraction and supercritical carbon dioxide (Jia et al, 2013;Ahmed et al, 2019;Jung et al, 2012;Yusoff et al, 2015;Hao et al, 2021;Wei et al, 2021). Soxhlet extraction takes a long time and consumes a lot of solvents (Mohammadpour et al, 2019;Castro & Priego-Capote, 2010).…”
