Insomnia in Diabetic Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract: Background: Insomnia is one of the most common problems in dialysis patients, and likely to contribute impairment in quality of life, which has a positive correlation with patients’ survival. In diabetic patients, morbidity and mortality are substantially higher than in the nondiabetic counterparts, and also the incidence of sleep disturbances. However, there is no means to predict sleep disturbance in the dialysis patients especially in diabetics. To define the prevalence and risk factors for insomnia in diab… Show more

“…[182530] In our study, however, age was independently associated with only one of the sleep quality domains, “day dysfunction due to sleepiness.” Although age is found to be independently associated with sleep quality, this association may be, at least in part, mediated by the presence of comorbid diseases, less physical activity, and nutritional status in older patients. [183133] We also found female gender an independent predictor of sleep latency. Female gender was associated with poor sleep quality in one other study,[26] but the other one found an association between male gender and sleep quality.…”

“…This findings revealed a significant association between Depression and Insomnia (r=0.334, P=0.000. Han found more than 68% patients on MHD having insomnia and most of them having depressive symptoms 15 . This finding is similar with present study.)…”

“…Furthermore, due to the biochemical process of dialysis and the inadequacy of current dialysis therapy, anaemia, sleep disturbance and restless leg syndrome are also common (O'Sullivan & McCarthy, 2009). In fact, insomnia is one of the most common problems dialysis patients experience, and it has been found to negatively affect patient survival and also to reduce quality of life (Han et al, 2002;Pierratos & Hanly, 2011).…”
