Drawing on institutional anomie theory, we examine how the crisis in local newspapers has induced organizational wrongdoings in local communities. We argue that, because local newspapers are the primary source of accountability journalism in local communities, their decline leads to an anomic state that increases the scale of organizational wrongdoing. We also investigate whether institutional complementarity helps overcome the anomic state: Due to functional similarity, community social connectedness compensates for the scarcity of local newspapers. Our analysis of U.S. metropolitan areas for the period of 2007–2015 reveals that the positive relationship between local newspaper scarcity and the scale of organizational wrongdoing is not present in all communities but does appear when a community lacks community social connectedness. We also find that this moderating role of community social connectedness is observed only for internal organizational wrongdoings that are less visible to the public than external ones.

As the world becomes increasingly connected and interdependent upon technology, crimes are moving online. Research on cybercrime is beginning to test the applicability of traditional criminological theories for understanding crime in this new medium. Using a national sample of 215 self-admitted cybercriminals, we examine Messner and Rosenfeld’s institutional anomie theory. Negative binomial regressions reveal that expressed levels of institutional anomie correlate with increased cybercrime activity. A curvilinear relationship was found, such that low and high levels of institutional anomie lead to higher levels of cybercrime. Our findings reveal how the dark side of the American Dream can lead to online criminality. Specifically, the penetration of, and accommodation to economic values dictated by American capitalism can lead individuals to adopt values such as the fetishism of money that, in turn, affects their online behavior and criminality.

Role of Personality Traits in the Academic Performance of University Students

This study aims to investigate the role of personality traits in the academic performance of undergraduate students. The participant sample consisted of N = 300 undergraduate students across 20 disciplines throughout the four-year undergraduate degree program at the university. A survey method was used to gather data from 300 participants on the variables of academic performance that were measured via the self-reported Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and the Big Five Inventory (BFI-2) for personality assessment as developed by Soto and John (2017). A correlational analysis between Conscientiousness of the Big-Five Personality Inventory and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) found a significant positive correlation between Conscientiousness and CGPA only. No other personality trait correlated to CGPA in the present study. The conclusion drawn from the present study is that high achievers have high levels of conscientiousness.
