Institutional Anomie Theory and Cybercrime—Cybercrime and the American Dream, Now Available Online

Abstract: As the world becomes increasingly connected and interdependent upon technology, crimes are moving online. Research on cybercrime is beginning to test the applicability of traditional criminological theories for understanding crime in this new medium. Using a national sample of 215 self-admitted cybercriminals, we examine Messner and Rosenfeld’s institutional anomie theory. Negative binomial regressions reveal that expressed levels of institutional anomie correlate with increased cybercrime activity. A curvilin… Show more

“…Anomies therefore pose a threat to the democratic structure of Western societies. In recent research, anomie approaches play an important role, especially in sociology and criminology (Agnew 2016;Collins and Menard 2021;Dearden et al 2021;Krohn et al 2019;Sebaldt et al 2020;Thome 2016). In democratic theory, 'antinomies' form a field of research with a long tradition in the history of ideas; the concept of anomie is suitable here to identify the discrepancy between normative guidelines and their actions, which bring about the opposite of the normative ideals, as a cross-structural democratic deficit.…”

“…[29] [1] According to Basuchoudhary & Searle [58] adware is annoying because it usually appears on all devices, especially smartphones and tablets, particularly when free software (freeware) or evaluation software (shareware) is installed. “…Interestingly, not many researchers applied macro-theoretical frameworks in efforts to explain cybercrime phenomenon in the past. Dearden et al (2021) examine Messner and Rosenfeld’s institutional anomie theory and uncover how institutional anomie correlates with increased cybercrime activity using a national sample of 215 self-admitted cybercriminals as a macro-theoretical approach.…”
