Insulin therapy for adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a position statement of the Korean Diabetes Association, 2017

Abstract: The Korean Diabetes Association (KDA) has regularly updated its Clinical Practice Guidelines. In 2017, the KDA published a position statement on the use of antihyperglycemic agents for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Growing evidence from new multinational clinical trials using novel and traditional insulin analogues has also been accumulated. Following global trends, many results of clinical trials, especially concerning the clinical efficacy and safety of insulin therapy, have been published a… Show more

“…Prescription errors were shown to be responsible for 70% of drug errors. The total number of prescriptions analyzed in the current study, 35 were noticeable, with medication errors 24 . This might be due to a few reasons, such as problems in handwriting, abbreviated forms, and insufficient medication orders 25 .…”

“…A computerized prescription order input system, manual medication review, and pharmacist participation in physician rounds can all help to improve drug safety 24 . As a result, the patient's drug needs must be adequately analyzed to avoid unfavourable side effects.…”

“…In addition, the use of metformin plus GLP-1 RA is increasing. This trend is because sulfonylurea is associated with issues of hypoglycemia or weight gain, while SGLT2 inhibitor and GLP-1 RA have acceptable profiles with significant cardiovascular and renal benefit when used alone and with a weight loss effect in addition to insulin [ 2 ]. DPP-4 inhibitor use is rapidly and widely growing because it seems to be beneficial regarding glycemic control without significant adverse effects [ 8 ].…”

“…Among patients with DM aged 30 years or older, 7.5% patients are estimated to use insulin [ 1 ]. Insulin treatment is necessary for all people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and a subgroup of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who are no longer able to reach an appropriate glycemic target with oral antidiabetic medication alone or those who have hyperglycemic symptoms or catabolic features [ 2 ]. Patients with T1DM typically require initiation with multiple daily injections (basal [long acting] insulin and bolus [short acting] insulin) or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion.…”
