“…No relationship was found between daily insulin dose, the quality of diabetic control, serum free insulin concentrations and insulin antibody binding con¬ stants, these inter-relationships have previously been the subject of many con¬ flicting studies (Kerp et al 1968;Hurn et al 1969;Dixon et al 1975;Lev-Ran 8c Rat 1973;Heding 1972;Nakagawa et al 1973;Lewis et al 1976). However, it has to be emphasized that studies of this nature are inevitably complicated by difficulties of assessing the quality of diabetic control (Malone et al 1976;Alberti et al 1975), in equating insulin dose with insulin requirement (Yalow 8c Berson 1961;Watkins et al 1967) and with methodological differences in the quantitative assessment of insulin antibodies (Hurn et al 1969;Dunlop 8c Court 1974).…”

“…Their circulating insulin consists of a mixture of free and antibody-bound insulin, the concentrations of which are affected by the characteristics of their anti-insulin antibodies (Molnar et al 1972). The influence of these antibodies on daily insulin dosage (Kerp et al 1968;Hum et al 1969) and on the quality of diabetic control (Dixon et al 1975;Andersen 1975) is controversial. The relative bio-availabilities of free and bound insulin is in dispute (Dixon et al 1975;Lev-Ran 8c Ratt 1973) as is the state of the circulating free insulin (Schlichtkrull et al 1971).…”

“…Tbe majority of observers found no correlation between insulin dose and antibody titer, but some found positive correlation with high affinity antibodies and negative one with antibodies of low affinity for insulin (Kerp, Kasemir and Kielding 1968). There are differences of opinion conceming the dinical significance of antibodies to various insulins in non-resistant diabetics.…”

“…At present two possible effects of insulin antibodies on insulin action are discussed, namely, insulin neutralization and stabilization of carbohydrate metabolism by an insulin depot effect. Although a neutralization effect in vitro is clearly demonstrable {Ziegler, Lippmann, Fiedler and Knospe 1972), the demonstration of a relationship between daily insulin dosage and plasma insulin binding is only possible if a large number of subjects are being investigated (Kerp, Kasemir and Kieling 1968;Ortved Andersen 1972;Mustaffa, Daggett and Nabarro 1977). Dixon, Exon and Malins (1975) proposed an improved diabetic stability owing to insulin antibodies.…”
