Integrated Analysis of a Competing Endogenous RNA Network Revealing a Prognostic Signature for Cervical Cancer

Abstract: Given the high morbidity and the trend of younger individuals being affected observed in cervical cancer, it is important to identify sensitive and effective biomarkers for predicting the survival outcome of patients. Based on data from 307 cervical cancer cases acquired from The Cancer Genome Atlas portal, 1920 differentially expressed mRNAs, 70 microRNAs(miRNAs), and 493 long non-coding(lncRNAs) were screened by comparing cervical cancer tissues with paracancerous tissues. A competing endogenous (ceRNA) netw… Show more

“… 11 A ceRNA network has been constructed to predict a prognostic signature in cervical cancer, comprising 13 messenger RNAs (mRNAs), 2 miRNAs and 3 lncRNAs. 29 In the regulatory network, lncRNAs, pseudogenes, circular RNAs and mRNAs act as ceRNAs, which compete for binding to miRNAs and subsequently regulate their activity. 30 - 32 Because of their critical regulatory functions in a wide range of biological processes, lncRNAs have attracted substantial attention among the ceRNAs.…”

“…Emerging studies have suggested that competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network plays a significant role in the development of cancers 9‐12 . In this network, lncRNAs function as sponges of microRNAs (miRNAs); thereby mRNAs are released and translated into proteins.…”

“…Fatty acid synthase gene (FaSn) was determined to be highly expressed in cervical tumor samples, and an inverse association between FaSn and overall survival was detected in patients with cervical cancer. Xia et al (39) demonstrated that FASN may serve as a potential prognostic biomarker in patients with cervical cancer through cox regression analysis. notably, the mrnas cXcl12 and ccl21 were both downregulated in our data, and are known to be involved in invasion, migration, and progression of cervical cancer (40,41).…”
