PurposeThis paper aims at identifying the main contributions of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies to the enhancement of knowledge management (KM).Design/methodology/approachA scoping review based on two stages was carried out. In the first stage, a numerical and descriptive analysis was conducted. In the second stage, the latent content of those papers was explored through a qualitative analysis, in which papers were assessed regarding the outcome of the implementation of ten I4.0 technologies on 14 KM abilities and 6 KM processes.FindingsSix technologies (e.g. Internet of Things (IoT), big data, cloud computing, simulation, visualisation and industrial robot) were claimed to have a significant contribution on KM, especially for creation, organisation, dissemination and application processes. Overall, results indicated that technologies can significantly contribute to KM, although the extent of such contribution varies across technologies, learning levels, KM processes and abilities.Originality/valueExisting studies in I4.0 fall short in exploring how embodied knowledge is articulated in practice, especially regarding opportunities to use new technological alternatives in favour of knowledge and learning development. This study complements the existing literature on I4.0 by identifying which technologies can contribute to KM. Also, a framework was proposed to examine the contribution of I4.0 technologies to KM at individual, team, and organisational levels.

Some research has highlighted the interrelationship between Quality Management and Knowledge Management for designing methods that help to achieve organizational excellence. Since the adaptability to changes determines the process competitiveness, it is necessary to unify the production of knowledge with 4.0 technologies, resulting in the smart industries. The objective of this paper is to develop a framework to jointly manage aspects of quality management and knowledge management, understanding their interdependence and joint contribution to organizational success. Therefore, we propose a new model for integrating Knowledge Management System and Quality Management System in Industry 4.0, based on a documentary, descriptive and quantitative data analysis carried out through surveys to a population interested in the subject. The proposed model is a response to the business need for tools that facilitate management in the context of Industry 4.0. It allows to focus on the most important variables of quality management and knowledge management and can be applied in any type of organization that has implemented 4.0 technologies.

This article is an overview of the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on Knowledge Management (KM), Digital Transformation (DT), and Industry 4.0, which defines the interactions, bonds, and interdependencies of these new research streams. Playing an important role in a progressive discipline, our research summarizes the state of the art past literature using a rigorous methodological approach. The researchers adopted the Scopus database in their analysis and used the Bibliometrix R package. The analysis revealed 761 peer-reviewed English articles. This study shows several research clusters: KM and DT; KM and innovation ecosystem; KM and border technology; and KM, decision making, and Industry 4.0. In addition, this article contributes to identifying growing areas of research that have uncovered previously unknown and interesting relationships between KM, DT, and the public sector. Therefore, the article emphasizes the important role of DT in the development of KM,, discusses future research perspectives as quantitative analysis and combines academics and practitioners.
