Integrated Image Processing and Computational Techniques to Characterize Formation Damage

Abstract: Filtrate and solid invasion from drilling fluids are two key sources of formation damage, and can result in formation permeability impairment. Typically, spurt invasion of mud solids causes the evolution of an external mud cake which tends to reduce further solids and filtrate influx. However, uncontrolled spurt and filtrate invasion are detrimental because they reduce the permeability of the formation. Mud composition, formation rock's permeability and porosity, and temperature can influence both spurt and fi… Show more

“…The particle morphologies can be quite diverse, based on biomass precursor or synthesis conditions that affect the energy storage performance [ 72 , 73 , 74 ]. As a step towards extracting useful information from electrode material texture, two input features—porosity and surface pore size—were extracted from microscope images using MATLAB [ 75 , 76 ]. A statistical overview was obtained through Pearson correlation, as presented in Figure S8 .…”

“…The chain diameter (the diameter of the polymer chain forming the hydrogel matrix) and porosity of the standard prints and the calibrated samples are also investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The average chain diameter is extracted by a customized MATLAB code based on a code provided for fiber diameter distribution [ 48 , 49 ] while the porosity is calculated as the ratio of the void area to the total area of the image. Figure 10 a shows some sample SEM images of standard prints with different powers (also see Figure S12 ).…”

“…In order to address both aspects of porosity and intra-biofilm connectivity, we utilize an algorithm that identifies pore spaces at the central biofilm layer-biofilms with larger pore sizes are better interconnected and thus more susceptible to diffusion. Porosity calculations were performed using an algorithmic image processing pipeline to detect pore regions (Rabbani and Salehi, 2017;Ezeakacha et al, 2018).…”
