Integrated infrared sensor system for on line monitoring of thermally sprayed particles

Abstract: The structure and properties of thermally sprayed coatings depend directly on the state of the particles before impact on the substrate or the already deposited coating layers. Monitoring particle parameters can thus provide a unique tool for optimising coating properties as well as controlling spraying processes during coating deposition. In this paper, a new optical sensing device for on line monitoring of temperature, velocity, diameter, and trajectory of in flight particles during coating production is des… Show more

“…6,9,10 In addition, there exist commercially available in-flight systems that allow simultaneous measurements of the particle characteristics. 4,13 One of these systems, the Tecnar DPV2000 in-flight diagnostic system (Tecnar Automation, St. Hubert, Quebec, Canada), which combines two-color pyrometry and an L2F system to provide temperature, velocity, particle size, and distribution, has been used by many researchers. 4,7,14 -17 In the current study, the in-flight particle properties such as temperature, velocity, and size of yttria-partially-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) during plasma spraying will be examined to understand the influence of the process parameters on these properties.…”

“…Porosity and microhardness are two of the basic and key factors to characterize the microstructure and properties of thermal spray coatings. Recently, some online particle monitoring systems (DPV2000) have been developed to measure the temperature and velocity of in-flight particles and to correlate them with the coating quality ( Ref 4,5). In thermal spray, the deposit is built up by successive impacts of molten droplets.…”
