Integrated optimal design of a hybrid locomotive with multiobjective genetic algorithms

Abstract: In this paper, the Integrated Optimal Design (IOD) approach for energetic system design is discussed. IOD aims at concurrently optimizing the architecture, the element sizing and the energy management in an energetic system. IOD leads to complex optimization problems (typically mixed variable problems with several constraints and multiple objectives) which can be solved with direct optimization methods. We illustrate the interest of this approach through the design of a hybrid environmentally friendly locomoti… Show more

“…Moreover, integration of HESS significantly optimizes the fuel consumption of the Diesel generator, for instance, in [186], a heterogeneous optimization is realized that actively achieves lower ratings for numerous energy sources with the cost optimizations in cases of various scenarios of climatic conditions, economics, and autonomy of the EV. In [187], an optimization method is proposed to minimize fuel consumption and losses in EV and PHEV.…”

“…In the different configurations presented, in one a fuel cell is the energy source, in the other a diesel engine is the power source. Other teams have investigated the advantages and drawbacks of the electric energy storage systems, using a combination of batteries and ultracapacitors [29,30].…”

“…More particularly, the design of a hybrid electrical locomotive requires taking into account at a system level couplings between architecture, sizing, energy management strategy and environment (Akli et al, 2009). For such devices, the system environment is associated with specific power driving profiles that have to be provided by all energy sources.…”
