Integrated tool chain for model-based design of Cyber-Physical Systems: The INTO-CPS project

Abstract: We describe INTO-CPS, a project that aims to realise the goal of integrated tool chains for the collaborative and multidisciplinary engineering of dependable Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). Challenges facing model-based CPS engineering are described, focussing on the semantic diversity of models, management of the large space of models and artefacts produced in CPS engineering, and the need to evaluate effectiveness in industrial settings. We outline the approach taken to each of these issues, particularly on t… Show more

“…In the INTO-CPS project we start from the view that disciplines such as software, mechatronics and control engineering have evolved with notations and theories that are tailored to their engineering needs, and that it is undesirable to suppress this diversity by enforcing uniform general-purpose models [3,4,10,11,12]. Our goal is to achieve a practical integration of diverse formalisms at the semantic level, and to realise the benefits in integrated tool chains.…”

“…INTO-CPS [15] is an integrated tool-chain to support model-based development of CPSs using co-simulation according to the FMI standard. The top-level component of the tool-chain is the INTO-CPS application, a graphical user interface for the management of co-simulation projects.…”

“…However, unlike our twin model, their model composition strategy does not support asynchrony which is desirable for scalability. Tools such as Ptolemy II [7], and INTO-CPS [8] are more focused on the simulation of cyber-physical systems (CPS) using different levels of formal models of computation (MoC). Yet, their focus have been on the offline simulation of cyber-physical systems, whereas the digital twin evolves with the system in real-time.…”
