Integrating action research into the psychology curriculum: Extending the service learning approach.

Abstract

The American Psychological Association's 2013 Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major emphasized the importance of linking education with social issues extending beyond college campuses. Action research aligns with this call because it is a mode of inquiry that links the generation of knowledge with social action. The underlying assumptions of this approach are comparable to those of service learning, a mode of teaching that links academic achievement with community service. A difference between the 2 is that service learning has been integrated into the undergraduate psychology curriculum, with notable benefits to students, whereas action research has not. This presentation highlights the value of action research and shows how it can be integrated into the education of psychology students. Included are guidelines for course integration as well as classroom-ready exercises emphasizing the skills of action researchers.
