Integrating battery into MMC submodule using passive technique

Abstract: Abstract-The modular structure and the many other advantages of the Modular Multilevel Converter makes it an attractive converter for Battery Energy Storage Systems, allowing the battery units to be distributed throughout the convert, connected in each submodule. However, such an arrangement results in large oscillating components in the battery current, which is harmful to battery performance and lifetime. In most literature this is solved using DC-DC converters as active interfaces between battery and submod… Show more

“…This circulating current flows through the SMs but not the external phase connections. Intentionally adding circulating harmonic currents has previously been proposed and used to reduce capacitor voltage ripple in DSCC (2 nd order harmonic current injection) [27]. In [21] the authors demonstrated that the required number of ESE-SMs can be significantly reduced by injecting 2 nd order harmonic currents in to the current waveform of the converter.…”

“…Then, the corrected energy storage could be used to quantify and optimize the ESS scale and its capital cost [22], [25]- [27]. For the proposed structure, the deliberate use of low-rated FB-SM voltages within the ESS permits direct connection of the EM across the FB-SM [16], [28]. The CHB converter investment cost can be evaluated as in [29] and [30].…”

“…Among various types of multilevel VSCs, modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become a remarkably appealing topology for high-voltage-direct-current (HVDC) transmission system and medium-voltage applications [5,6]. In addition to the inherited feature of multilevel VSCs -generation of close sinusoidal output voltage and current with low harmonic distortion, the MMC is also excellent in terms of modularity, scalability, ability to handle a wide range of power ratings, redundancy and efficiency [6][7][8]. Thus, other potential applications for MMC include flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS), photovoltaic generation, wind turbine applications, electric drives, static var compensation (STATCOM), frequency converters and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) [5,7,8].…”
