Integrating Research into design foundations Curriculum: Learning and Testing Theory

Abstract: ISSUE Design students can integrate theoretical knowledge from foundation‐level design courses into real‐world applications through basic research exercises. GOAL Through the development of research questions, students gain experience in problem seeking, basic research methods, ond analytical skills. They learn first‐hand that the seemingly abstract concepts taught in foundation classes can be tested and new knowledge gained. APPLICATION Introducing students to basic theory testing through the use of hypothesi… Show more

“…For example, emphasize the dissemination of graduate research; graduate students, if guided appropriately, offer a resource for systematic theory building (e.g., Vogel, 2002). Theory can also be more consciously integrated in the undergraduate foundation curriculum as suggested by Martinson (1998).…”

“…This discussion has also taken place within classroom walls and in trade publications within the field. The discussion spanned many contexts, from how theory can be infused into the K–12 classroom environment (Martinson, 1998; Portillo, 1996) to the contribution of theory toward the development of the body of knowledge within the discipline (Silverstein, 1993).…”
