Integration and early testing of WEAVE: the next-generation spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope

Abstract: We present an update on the overall integration progress of the WEAVE next-generation spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT), now scheduled for first light in early-2021, with almost all components now arrived at the observatory. We also present a summary of the current planning behind the 5-year initial phase of survey operations, and some detailed end-to-end science simulations that have been implemented to evaluate the final on-sky performance after data processing. WEAVE will provid… Show more

“…The MOS and mIFU buttons and MOS, mIFU and LIFU slitlets were high-precision mechanics because the instrument concept did not offer ways of accommodating all the geometrical defects leading to optical misalignment of the fibers 5 , even in the frame of the optical alignment realized using the gluing bench. They were high precision mechanics needed in large numbers.…”

“…We expect a large number of such stars to be observed in the course of wide-field surveys such as WEAVE (Dalton et al 2020) and 4MOST (de Jong et al 2019). The findings of our investigation can be used to select these stars from the wide surveys.…”
