Integration Of An Interactive Free Body Diagram Assistant With A Courseware Authoring Package And An Experimental Learning Management System

Abstract: We have developed a Free Body Diagram (FBD) Assistant that provides students with an opportunity to practice FBD construction and to receive feedback. The system includes a mechanism for tracking students' progress over time. A previous version was written using Macromedia Flash 5 and data storage and retrieval was via a SQL server. This was a stand-alone package that integrated several functions including an interactive FBD drawing tool, an assessment and feedback package, a FBD authoring tool, and session ad… Show more

“…Two other related systems are the Andes physics tutoring system (Vanlehn et al 2005) and the Free Body Diagram Assistant (Roselli et al 2003), which allow students to create electronic solutions for homework assignments. Both systems were designed as alternatives to pen-and-paper homework assignments to make classroom adoption easy for professors.…”

“…Because homework, as the dominant means of providing practice, often fails to isolate discrete skills and lacks immediate feedback, several efforts have been made to develop computer-based tools to aid students by personalizing feedback. Some tools in this area include an FBD Assistant developed at Vanderbilt University [15] and Andes [16], a physics tutoring system resulting from collaboration between the University of Pittsburgh and the US Naval Academy. Both of these programs are effective in generating student learning gains related to drawing FBDs, but both are limited to computers and require working within non-intuitive interfaces or learning management systems.…”

“…In both of these applications, students are required to do some pre-installation or use special resources provided by the instructor. Roselli et al 9 present a web-based platform for creating and grading mechanics free body diagrams. Their FBD Assistant is implemented using the Adobe (then Macromedia) Flash platform and thus prevents the use of mobile devices.…”
