Integration of Joint Power-Heat Flexibility of Oil Refinery Industries to Uncertain Energy Markets

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel approach to optimize the main energy consumptions of heavy oil refining industries (ORI) in response to electricity price uncertainties. The whole industrial sub-processes of the ORI are modeled mathematically to investigate the joint power-heat flexibility potentials of the industry. To model the refinery processes, an input/output flow-based model is proposed for five main refining units. Moreover, the role of storage tanks capacity in the power system flexibility is investigated.… Show more

“…It is important to highlight that the present work is focused on the analysis of energy consumption as a function of the production of oil derived fuels (GPL, gasoline, diesel/jet fuel, and fuel oil and other vacuum products). Power generation is a very important business associated to oil refineries [73], but its analysis is excluded from this work. Specifically, three integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC) plants using refinery residues as feedstock are installed at SARAS (570 MW e ), API (280 MW e ) and ISAB (550 MW e ) refineries [55].…”

“…In [123], cogeneration facilities and on-site solar generation units were suggested to increase the flexibility of the industrial plant. A robust optimization model is proposed to unlock the flexibility of the refinery processes in response to energy prices [124].…”

“…Last, but not least, the CHP operation is influenced not only by internal steam demand, but by external factors as well (energy management strategy of the refinery, changeable energy prices and their uncertainty, etc.) [75].…”
