Integration of MALDI-TOFMS as high-throughput screening tool into the workflow of combinatorial polymer research

Abstract: The possibilities of an integration of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry ͑MALDI-TOFMS͒ as an high-throughput screening tool into the workflow of combinatorial materials research are discussed. A multiple layer sample preparation technique for MALDI is described in detail and its possibilities of automation and miniaturization are discussed. Automated MALDI sample preparation could be performed within an automated synthesizer robot as well as with an ink-jet printer. T… Show more

“…By varying spin speed and solution concentration, a discrete film thickness library could be built; moreover, the method can be used to cast discrete compositional libraries of, for example, polymer blends. Another route for discrete film library fabrication is ink jetting, which has been explored by several groups [8][9][10][11]. As with sector spin coating, this technique can be used to create compositional spreads.…”

“…An additional important component of the targeted development of highly sensitive MALDI-TOF MS substrates is the application of a suitable matrix, which enables the desorption of the matrix and the analyte as well as an efficient energy transfer of the laser irradiation to the analyte molecules. In our approach a multiple layer spotting approach [20] is applied.…”
