Integration of WirelessHART networks in Distributed Control Systems using PROFINET IO

Abstract: In this paper we describe a method to integrate WirelessHART networks in Distributed Control Systems (DCS) using PROFINET IO. By modeling the WirelessHART network in the Generic Station Description file, that describes a PRO-FINET IO device, the WirelessHART related configuration can be distributed from the central engineering stations. In this way, both process controller configuration and WirelessHART network configuration is engineered and maintained from a central location. Thus the end-user does not need … Show more

“…Its physical layer is based on the IEEE 802.15.4 technology and the self-defined, time driven MAC layer is distinguished by its 10 ms time-slot. Several additional features, like self-healing, self-organizing, ease of maintenance [6] make WirelessHART a notable step towards wireless industrial networks. The wireless standard for industrial automation, ISA100 [7] is specified for IEEE 802.…”

“…However, the focus is kept on WirelessHART device hardware connectivity, the WirelessHART device configuration and data integration approach to the automation system is not mentioned. The integration approach of WirelessHART network to the DCS using profinet IO are described in [8]. In [13], Trikaliotis and Gnad presented different options for integration of WirelessHART into fieldbuses by using different mapping techniques.…”

“…Their main conclusion was that device and network operation must be synchronized. In addition, results on integration [11], scheduling [12], clock drift [13], and packet losses [14] have been studied with respect to control and Wireless HART. Nevertheless, the work in [12]- [14] assume that actuators are a supported and integrated part of the standard, which is not the case.…”
