Integrative taxonomy of Hemimycale (Hymedesmiidae: Poecilosclerida: Demospongiae) from Southeastern Brazil, with the description of two new species

Abstract: Two new species of Hemimycale from Southeastern Brazil are described in this study with the use of morphological and molecular data. Hemimycale oxeata sp. nov. is orange salmon colored in life and has unique oxeote like tornote spicules in addition to the typical (subtylo-)strongyles of the genus. Hemimycale ceadensis sp. nov. is reddish orange in life and has raised, tiny pore sieves, and subtylostrongyles with asymmetrical ends and raphides as microscleres. The diagnosis of the genus Hemimycale was s… Show more

“…The genus Phorbas belongs to the class Demospongiae, order Poecilosclerida, family Hymedesmiidae [14], and is the most representative among the 10 accepted genera, which also includes Hamigera, Acanthancora, and Hemimycale [15][16][17][18]. Phorbas stands out not only in the number of isolated MNPs, but also in the large number of bioactive compounds, mainly displaying cytotoxic activity [19].…”

“…The genus Phorbas belongs to the class Demospongiae, order Poecilosclerida, family Hymedesmiidae [14], being the biggest representative of the family that contains 10 accepted genera, including beyond Phorbas, Hamigera, Acanthancora, Hemimycale [15][16][17][18]. The genus Phorbas stands out in the number of isolated MNPs, but also in relation to a large number of bioactive compounds, mainly displaying cytotoxic activity [19].…”

“…These provinces were further subdivided into five ecoregions (areas of relatively homogeneous species composition, clearly distinct from adjacent systems) as shown on Figure a. This division of coastal and shelf areas of the Brazilian coast greatly influenced subsequent studies on marine conservation and biogeography (e.g., Bissoli & Bernardino, ; Huguenin et al, ; Mantelatto, Cruz, & Creed, ). Importantly, this biogeographic classification adopted an older view that the main biogeographic break in the region is Cabo Frio, which is the southest limit for coral reefs, and is in rough agreement with the 23°C isotherm data (Briggs, , ; Palacios, ).…”
