Battery-operated systems are always concerned about the proper management and sizing of a battery. A Traditional Battery Management System (BMS) only includes battery-aware task scheduling based on the discharge characteristics of a whole battery pack and do not take into account the mode of the load being served by the battery. On the other hand, an efficient and intelligent BMS should monitor the battery at a cell level and track the load with significant consideration of the load mode. Depending upon the load modes, the common modes of discharge (MOD) of a battery identified so far are Constant Power Mode (CPM), Constant Current Mode (CCM) and Constant Impedance Mode (CIM). This paper comparatively analyzes the discharging behavior of batteries at an individual cell level for different load modes. The difference in discharging behavior from mode to mode represents the study of the mode-dependent behavior of the battery before its deployment in some application. Based on simulation results, optimal capacity sizing and BMS operation of battery for an assumed situation in a remote microgrid has been proposed.

This paper proposes a novel modular architecture for Electrical Energy Storages (EESs), consisting of multiple seriesconnected cells. In contrast to state-of-the-art architectures, the presented approach significantly improves the energy utilization, safety, and availability of EESs. For this purpose, each cell is equipped with a circuit that enables an individual control within a homogeneous architecture. One major advantage of our approach is a direct and concurrent charge transfer between each cell of the EES using inductors. To enable a system-level modeling and performance analysis of the architecture, a detailed investigation of the components and their interaction with the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control was performed at transistor-level. At system-level, we propose a control algorithm for the charge transfer that aims at minimizing the energy loss and balancing time. The results give evidence of the significant advantages of our architecture over existing passive and active balancing methods in terms of energy efficiency and charge equalization time.

Compared with the conventional homogeneous electrical energy storage (EES) systems, hybrid electrical energy storage (HEES) systems provide high output power and energy density as well as high power conversion efficiency and low self-discharge at a low capital cost. Cycle efficiency of a HEES system (which is defined as the ratio of energy which is delivered by the HEES system to the load device to energy which is supplied by the power source to the HEES system) is one of the most important factors in determining the overall operational cost of the system. Therefore, EES banks within the HEES system should be prudently designed in order to maximize the overall cycle efficiency. However, the cycle efficiency is not only dependent on the EES element type, but also the dynamic conditions such as charge and discharge rates and energy efficiency of peripheral power circuitries. Also, due to the practical limitations of the power conversion circuitry, the specified capacity of the EES bank cannot be fully utilized, which in turn results in over-provisioning and thus additional capital expenditure for a HEES system with a specified level of service. This is the first paper that presents an EES bank reconfiguration architecture aiming at cycle efficiency and capacity utilization enhancement. We first provide a formal definition of balanced configurations and provide a general reconfigurable architecture for a HEES system, analyze key properties of the balanced reconfiguration, and propose a dynamic reconfiguration algorithm for optimal, online adaptation of the HEES system configuration to the characteristics of the power sources and the load devices as well as internal states of the EES banks. Experimental results demonstrate an overall cycle efficiency improvement of by up to 108% for a DC power demand profile, and pulse duty cycle improvement of by up to 127% for high-current pulsed power profile.
